Academic to Athlete!
I thought I was well, but I was not. I never took time for myself. As a professor, one could imagine I was a student for much of my life; earning bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees.

Additionally, I have been married for 17 years and a father for 13 years. Though possible to participate in self-care, with the aforementioned responsibilities, I never made time.

I was successful as a husband, father, and professor, but I was in poor health. In November 2017, I set a goal to become physically fit. It all started with a goal! I found movement that was fun and ensured it was feasible. I joined a kickboxing gym that was minutes from my house. It was located in the parking lot of my son's school bus stop. Additionally, it was only a 30 minutes session; so it fit my schedule.

After a couple years (2017 to 2019) of kickboxing, I did general High-Intensity Interval Training (or HIIT).

After a year (2019-2020) of HIIT, gyms closed due to COVID-19. During this time, I began doing a combination of HIIT and calisthenics (so you do not need a lot of equipment to get a good workout). I also began running...a lot...and became good at it! Each month, I completed virtual running challenges with members of my alma mater's Black alumni association...Go Blue! I cannot stress the importance of community/fellowship in my journey.

When gyms re-opened in Summer 2020, I set a new goal--strength training, with heavy weights. I continued running and lifting for two years. I even joined Black Men Run, again the importance of fellowship.

In Summer 2022, I casually mentioned to Kanika (my wife) that I was interested in entering a bodybuilding competition. It was a single conversation and nothing more. In December 2022, I was thinking of a new year's resolution...and bodybuilding re-surfaced. I began training and competed in my first show in May 2023. I was the oldest competitor, yet placed highly. I became an athlete...for the first time in my life!

My experience with conscientious eating habits and exercise resulted in weight loss, muscle growth, and enhanced wellness. Such influenced my decision to work with others to achieve their goals. During my journey, I have lost 85 lbs. I continue to modify aspects of my fitness program, one at a time.
Fitness has been my ticket to wellness!
